It’s the last Saturday of the month again, that means it’s time for my (slightly) regular monthly dev log. As always, I’ll discuss what I’ve been up to, what’s new & what’s next. Let’s get into it…
Another month of updates
Last month we were working on updating Egg it and pushing it to iOS. The main thing I wanted to achieve was online leaderboards. And I couldn’t be happier with the results! It was also a lot easier than I expected (With the help of Google Play Game Services). That doesn’t mean it was a walk in the park, but the biggest issue I had was clearing all the test scores I’d set. I’d draw that up as a win, usually anything game dev is much more complicated.
It required moving a few things about on the game over screen (and removing tap to restart) but I definitely prefer it, here’s the results:
I’ve since had many responses and posts about people scores. Honestly, adding leaderboards is one of the best things I’ve done in any of my games, It’s makes the experience a little more sociable. Here’s the leaderboard to date (I know, it’s bad when I’m not even spot 1) :
After that update went live I started working on the what will be the next & final update. I made the game in a weekend, I think supporting it for a month (and a bit) is reasonable enough. It’s come a long way since then so I’ll be extending the gameplay once more with some new challenges & unlocks, porting it to iOS and then I’m moving my eggs to a different basket.
I’ve had some fun with the costumes this time though, up until now the egg skins have just been different materials & shaders. I then added lights, particles & accessories to bring forward more ideas. This time we decided to fully unwrap & texture my egg. Here’s a preview of two new skins I posted earlier:
And here’s a more exclusive one I haven’t posted, just for you:
It’s not a joke, it’s actually censored, that’s the skin. I won’t give away too much more just yet, not until the update is closer to being finished. I still have some other things to juggle at the minute so I’m not sure how long that will be. Let’s talk about some of that…
Last month I said I’d be looking into publishing Egg It on the App Store and securing an iOS dev account for future games. Well, I investigated it and I got close too. I managed to get everything I need to successfully build & test on apple devices, and now have the only iOS copy of my game on my personal phone (Woo!):
I could finish setting it up now and submit it for approval to the store, but apple has a few rules. As an individual I can release the game under my legal birth name, and its mostly easy to set up. But I’d prefer to be releasing my games under AlextheDev like I have been doing up until now. To do that it has to be an official legally registered business, which was the only push I needed, so let’s do it…
Yup, it’s time to do things properly. I’ve been spending these last few weeks researching… Everything. There are still a few small prerequisites before I can continue, mostly lots of paperwork. I’m currently still waiting for some forms to arrive, then I have to wait for them to be processed and wait for a response. I’m not exactly sure how long this process will take but things may be quiet until next month. But hopefully it will all be worth it.
I’ll remain working on the final update for Egg it alongside all this, but it will be slightly delayed. Once the update is finished, if the registration process is still in progress I will either add more to the update (make it worth the wait) or I will plan and make a start on project 2. Either way work on the games never stop, a dev never sleeps!
So, let’s see where we get to by next month, fingers crossed
Until next time…
